One might question why is CPR needed, and why are CPR and First Aid training are important. The critical answer here is life and increasing the survival rate of victims.
In life, CPR is essential. This is why it’s important that we all learn CPR at a young age in case of emergencies. For example, sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone at any time. If CPR is performed immediately, it can double or triple the chance of survival from an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. When someone goes into cardiac arrest, the blood stops flowing into the brain from the heart and other parts of the body. This can cause damage to the brain and other vital organs. This is why we perform CPR to keep the blood flowing throughout the body to help save the victim.
Though CPR may be needed, performing proper CPR can lead to complications as well as CPR legalities. A common complication is fractures to the ribs or sternum. This complication is generally manageable and should not stop anyone from performing CPR. If CPR is performed on someone who doesn’t need it, though it can be uncomfortable for that person, only about 2% suffer any injury. The ability to successfully perform the CPR skills can deteriorate in as little as 3 to 6 months after taking a training course; hence, CPR re-certification is necessary. Therefore, refresher CPR training is strongly recommended. Though an optimal interval for refresher training has not been established, it is recommended that training intervals of 12 to 24 months are not adequate. Refresher courses may be needed as often as every six months to keep skills sharp.
