Are you considering purchasing an AED defibrillator? Many first-time purchasers of AEDs want to know which AED brand and model is best, but no single device is better than the other. All AEDs are FDA-approved and can be trusted to work reliably; there’s no specific AED brand that’s proven to save more lives.
Purchasing an AED requires a significant investment, so it’s important to research your options to determine which AED is the most suitable, cost-effective choice. There are several factors to consider when purchasing an AED, including the cost, features, size, display options, and warranty.
Size and Weight
All AEDs are light and portable, so you don’t have to worry about any particular AED being burdensome to use because of its weight or dimensions. If you plan on putting the AED in a first aid rescue kit, however, opt for a compact model that you will be able to fit into the kit with ease.
All AEDs are user-friendly and use visual and audio cues to guide you, but each AED on the market features a unique visual display. The best AEDs have large, bright displays that are easier to read, particularly in low light and bright light conditions.
Batteries
Estimated battery life is another factor to consider when selecting an AED defib. Battery life varies significantly from one AED to another, and it can have a major impact on the device’s total cost of ownership. When you’re shopping around for an AED, determine the average annual cost of an AED’s battery by dividing the cost of the battery by its estimated battery life.
Accessories
All AEDs consist of the device itself, electrode pads, and batteries, but some come with additional accessories, such as a carrying case and extra pads. When you’re researching different AED defib models, evaluate exactly what comes in each package so you can determine which model offers the most value.
Voice Prompts
All AEDs feature voice prompts that give you instructions, but some models have more detailed voice prompts than others. Some people prefer simpler voice prompts, while others prefer to receive highly specific, detailed instructions. Choose an AED with voice prompts that suit your preferences.
Pediatric Use
If you plan to place an AED in a location where there are many children, consider getting an AED unit that comes with pediatric pads or a child key or switch. Through the use of pediatric pads or a child key/switch, the shock level of AEDs can be adjusted for pediatric use.
Warranty
All new AEDs come with a warranty of at least five years. Some models even come with a seven year warranty at no additional charge, as well as warranties for battery packs and other accessories.
