There are about 10,000 cardiac arrests in the workplace each year in the United States, according to the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA). As a society, we have the ability to reduce the number of deaths from sudden cardiac arrest in the workplace. The key lies in immediately performing CPR and using an AED to deliver electrical shocks to the heart.
Why Is CPR and AED Training So Important?
Providing CPR training to your employees arms them with the skills to respond to a cardiac arrest victim as quickly as possible. Without bystanders who know how to perform CPR or use an AED, cardiac arrest can be a fatal event.
CPR, or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, saves lives by keeping the blood flow active and extending the opportunity for successful resuscitation once trained medical staff arrive on site. CPR is a part of the chain of survival, which consists of the five following links:
• Recognition of cardiac arrest and calling 911
• Early CPR
• Rapid defibrillation
• Emergency medical services
• Advanced life support
A strong chain of survival significantly boosts the chances of survival and recovery for sudden cardiac arrest victims. Empowering your employees with these life saving skills creates a safer workplace and gives them peace of mind.
EMC offers OSHA compliant emergency training for the workplace. OSHA requires organizations in certain industries to obtain CPR and First Aid training for their employees. If your organization is in one of these industries, you must provide CPR and First Aid training for at least one employee or employees to be able to respond at all times. In any other industry, you have to consider the likelihood of injury when assessing your training needs. Training has to be maintained on a regular basis.
Your Partners in Safety Training for the Workplace
Sudden cardiac arrest strikes without warning. If someone loses consciousness in front of you and does not respond to a tap on the shoulder, call 911 immediately, and check for breathing. If no breath is present, administer CPR, and use an AED if one is available. When cardiac arrest occurs, it’s essential to start CPR within two minutes. After three minutes, lack of blood flow to the brain can lead to progressively worsening brain injury.
While CPR training classes provide a number of benefits to the workplace, the skills they provide go far beyond the four walls of your office. Employees will take that knowledge with them wherever they go, helping to make the entire community a safer place.
